We delivered our third run of workshops across schools in Aberdeen with funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry, EUs HyTrEc2 project, the UK Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and Toyota GB.
The Aberdeen Schools Hydrogen Challenge is delivered in partnership with the University of Aberdeen, with students, alumni and lecturers delivering and facilitating workshops, this is intended to allow students the chance to discuss Higher Education with those directly involved, finding out about their area of study and where they expect their careers to lead once they have left university.
2014 & 2015
Arcola Energy was delighted to be asked to deliver the inaugural Aberdeen Schools Hydrogen Challenge to support the initial roll out of Hydrogen Buses on the streets of Aberdeen across 2014 & 2015.
The wider Hydrogen Bus Project, which received backing from Europe, the UK Government and the Scottish Government, delivered a hydrogen infrastructure in Aberdeen in 2014, including the deployment of a fleet of 10 hydrogen buses.

The Aberdeen Hydrogen Bus Project arrived in Aberdeen in 2014. Working with a range of partners. A hydrogen infrastructure was built; including a maintenance facility and re-fuelling station. The project’s aims were to explore the economic and environmental benefits from hydrogen transport technology, improve air quality, test an innovative technology, contribute to Scotland’s Green transport targets and use hydrogen energy storage to ease electrical grid constraints. This is part of the wider H2 Aberdeen strategy: A Hydrogen Economy developed by the Hydrogen Transport Economy project (HyTrEc).
HyTrEc is part-funded by the Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme which aims to support the validation, promotion and adoption of innovative hydrogen technologies across the North Sea Region and enhance the region’s economic competitiveness within the transport and associated energy sectors. The project was instrumental to informing and shaping the development of infrastructure, technology, skills and financial instruments to support the application of hydrogen based technologies.
HyTrEc was keen to support the Aberdeen Schools Hydrogen Challenge in its role of providing a fun and hands-on way for students to learn about hydrogen it’s significance locally. Education plays a key role in the hydrogen strategy.
